Electrocardiograms (resting and exercise)
As part of our comprehensive medical services, the San GP Centre provides electrocardiogram (ECG) tests at our centre on Sydney’s north shore. Patients may undergo an ECG test to investigate symptoms such as chest pain, severe tiredness, shortness of breath, feeling dizzy or noticing an irregular heartbeat.
ECGs may also be used to evaluate the performance of medical interventions such as heart medications or the effectiveness of an implanted pacemaker. Pre-surgery or post-surgery ECGs can be used to observe changes and provide effective monitoring of the heart’s performance.
In an ECG test electrodes are placed at specific locations on the body to measure the electrical activity. The ECG sensors detect the electrical impulses and record the speed, rhythm and timing of the electrical pulses in different parts of the heart. The results are displayed in a wave pattern corresponding to specific parts of the heart’s cycle, allowing anomalies to be observed.
The tests may be conducted while the patient is resting or during exercise and can be used to identify signs of conditions such as heart attacks, arrhythmias or structural issues. Following review of your ECG results, if required your GP can arrange for additional diagnostic tests or services which can be conveniently organised through the San private hospital.
