Mirena & Implanon insertions
Contraceptive implants such as Implanon and Mirena are convenient and effective long-term birth control methods which may be considered as part of family planning or to manage sexual health issues. At the San GP Centre at Wahroonga our doctors have expertise in women’s health and can provide advice on the suitability and use of contraceptive insertions.
Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) come with benefits and risks which your GP will discuss with you. Many women find them useful as they provide contraception without the need to remember to take a daily oral pill and are reversible if pregnancy is desired at a future date.
There are two main types of contraceptive insertions available in Australia: Implanon and Mirena. Implanon is an implant which is inserted under the skin while Mirena is a device which inserted into the uterus. The devices provide for the slow release of hormones into the blood stream and uterus respectively. An Implanon implant can last for up to three years while a Mirena device may last up to five years.
If you are considering using a contraceptive implant, make an appointment to talk to one of the women’s health professionals at the San GP Centre on Sydney’s north shore. Our doctors can advise on the benefits and risks of using a contraceptive insertion and which type may most suit your situation.
